Healthy Toddler

Healthy Toddler

This morning while I watched my son eat what he picked out for breakfast – a granola bar and a “Go-Gurt” I wondered what his daily amount were supposed to me. I had always been taught mine, but it seems like no one ever took the time to tell me about how much of what my baby is supposed to be eating in a day to meet his food pyramid requirements. So I’ve spent the day reading sites and finding the guidelines. The site that I liked the most was www.kidshealth.org.

For a two year old he is supposed to be having three ounces of grains, one cup of vegetables, one cup of fruits, two cups of milk, and two ounces of meat. Usually I have absolutely no problem on getting him to eat grains. But I’m pretty sure that he is not getting a whole cup of vegetables in a day. I checked his picture menu I made him the other day and sure enough there are not many vegetables on there. There are some carrots, and a bell pepper and potatoes. But I was always taught that a potato isn’t a vegetable it’s a starch.

I now know that I need to work on him eating more vegetables. Otherwise it seems like I was worrying about nothing. It’s a good thing I’ve always had him drink V-8 fruit and veggie juices. But I’ll have to check and  see how many servings of vegetables are in one of them for his age group.
