Product Review - Cloud B Giraffe

Cloud B Giraffe

It’s a known fact that babies calm down and sleep better to a “shushing” sound. And if you go into almost any baby isle you’ll find several different items that make noise for babies to sleep to. But the item that I would recommend to other parents would be the Cloud B Gentle Giraffe –On the Go.

It has a little noise box that tucks safely into the back of the giraffe. It has four different soothing sounds, one of them being the shushing womb sound that works magic on a baby. It has a volume control so if you’re shopping it can be cranked up to help cover up the noise of the store or if you’re at home it can be turned down to be more soothing and relaxing. It takes two AA batteries, but unlike other baby items it doesn’t just burn through them. And what I find nice about the take along is that it has a Velcro strap that you can use to attach to the car seat, the stroller, the crib, or just about any place. And the giraffe itself is a soft plush toy so it’s still comfortable to hug and cuddle with.

We bought it for Thomas when he was four months old. The Easter Bunny left it in his basket. And now that he is two years old, it is still one of his favorite things to have around. It brings as much comfort as his favorite teddy bear or his favorite blanket.

I bought mine at Target for about 25 dollars. But you can also purchase it directly from them at http://cloudb.stores.yahoo.net/ongo1.html.  So if you’re looking for something to help your baby sleep better or for a good baby shower gift I would recommend this. I haven’t had any troubles with the one that I bought.

It’s just one of them items that help parents keep a little bit of sanity intact.

Toddler Picture Menu

Toddler Picture Menu

If your toddler is anything like mine when it comes to eating then you know that if they don’t pick it out then they don’t eat it. Even then sometimes they refuse. So I’ve tried to always make Thomas decide what he wants for his meals and his snacks. I give him a bunch of suggestions and he chooses. Problem is sometimes he acts like he has no ideas what it is that I’m telling him about. So then I start pulling everything out of the cupboards and the freezers and out of the fridge until he sees a picture of something that he wants to eat. So I decided that something needed to change. The pulling things out while a 30 pound toddler wiggles around on your hip and turns down what seems like an endless list of options got tedious – fast.

So I created Thomas’ Picture Menu. All I did was compiled a list of the foods I knew he liked to eat; Google searched pictures for them, and then arranged them into a menu. Nothing fancy, just plain. And then I printed it out onto some cardstock that I already had from a previous project.

I arranged it into meal categories, and put healthy snacks on the back. When it’s time to eat I simply hand him the menu and he picks out what he would like to eat. No more walking around the house scavenger hunting for something to feed him.

Learning the ABCs

Learning the ABCs

After watching parents with their kids, it seems like a lot of them think that the ABCs isn’t something that needs to be taught to a toddler, at least not until they are much closer to kindergarten. But I disagree. Which is why my two year old (26 months) knows all but 6 of his letters, and he only mixes up the ones that look familiar with another, for example I and T or M and W. Now I know I can’t take credit for ALL of this, a lot of it has to go to him, and his willingness to learn. But heck I made him so I should get credit.

I can’t honestly pinpoint when I started teaching him the alphabet but it was when he was pretty young. And I’ve always read to him ever since I brought him home from the hospital.

One of the books we read is the Crayola ABC book

It’s not a very interesting read for mommy but he loves it so we read it. And now he can kind of read it to me.

We also read Dr. Seuss’ ABC book

To be honest this is a MUCH better book to read.  But even reading it 20 times in a row gets tiring.

While reading to him with these books and other books I point to the words, so that he knows there’s a specific story that goes along with this book, and that’s where it is found. Other than reading I also bought him Leapfrog’s ABC toy.

Originally I bought it in hopes that it would distract him from my cell phone. But that plan back fired. It made him more interested in it. But even though this toy is great for learning the alphabet – Thomas likes to hold it upside down so we had a little rough patch when he could only tell you what a letter was if it was upside down. But that was fixable.

Another toy that I have bought for him is the Vtech Innotab 2

And he absolutely loves it. As do I. I haven’t had any downfalls with it yet. But be forewarned buy the rechargeable batteries and the charger otherwise it will shoot threw batteries like no one’s business. Your welcome Duracell.

Other than that it was pretty much just practice, practice, practice. And A LOT of the “parrot game.” You know the game, where they have to repeat everything you say.

I guess we also had those little plastic magnetic letters for the fridge. But he never played with them that much. And there’s a big “Don’t put it in your mouth” problem.

We do a lot of writing and rewriting the letters. I like to write the letters and he will tell me what it is. And after he got more confident in them I don’t write them in order. I jump all over the alphabet like a flee on crack.

I try to change it up so that it doesn’t get boring and he no longer wants to keep learning. We write on the cupboard with dry erase markers, on different types and colors of paper, with different types of writing utensils. I’ll make letters out of play dough for him to tell me what they are. There’s a huge list of possibilities on ways to keep it interesting for memorization. Also he likes to watch me on the computer and point out letters that he sees. He LOVES to point out the “x” like I have no idea it’s there. But as he does that I ask him what letter to find and he points to it and tells me its name over again. Just keep the games changing.

After this we will have to work on writing the letters, but I’ll take my victories where and when I can. And as of now my son knows the most of his alphabet. That alone makes me one extremely proud Momma.

Like my mom told me – They won’t know it unless you teach it to them. So you don’t have to wait until you kid is in kindergarten or pre-K to learn scholarly things. And it’s never too early to teach them something.

Healthy Brushing

Healthy Brushing

When I found out that I was pregnant, I signed up for emails from about any baby site that I could find, like Parenting.com. This morning I was reading an email from Parenting.com about how to properly brush your baby’s teeth.

This is the link

Since Thomas is two years old now it’s pretty much a repeat of things that I already knew – begin brushing with a rubber finger brush and then brush with a baby tooth brush and fluoride-free toothpaste. But they don’t tell you what to do when your baby doesn’t like you messing around in their mouth. Some kids simply hate getting their teeth brushed.

So I thought I would tell you how I began brushing Thomas’ teeth. I didn’t start with a washcloth as soon as I brought him home. I was always told that you start brushing their teeth when they start getting teeth. So that’s what I did. He never honestly liked the rubber finger brush. Whenever I would use it I would simply get my finger munched on. So I used a baby toothbrush.

Then we met our next problem – he didn’t seem like he honestly cared for the taste of the “toothpaste”. Whenever we used it he would turn his head and clamp his mouth shut. But when I brushed his teeth with a moistened tooth brush he loved it. He also loved being given the toothbrush so he could “brush” his own teeth – which is honestly just him chewing on the toothbrush. So to solve the problem of the toothpaste I simply switched it to salt. Just regular old table salt.

The salt works because it works along the lines of an antibacterial – leaving the clean sparkling clean ant the breath fresh. And Thomas LOVES the salt. He now loves brushing his teeth. And often dings around until he finds my toothbrush to play with while we’re getting ready. For some reason my tooth brush is much more fun playing with than his.

·         Other things I do to keep him interested is let him watch me brush my teeth – children see that this is something everyone does and they also want to pretend to be adults and do adult like things.

·         I let him pick out his toothbrushes.

·         I let him have play toothbrushes. This turns the chore into a game and makes them more willing to cooperating when the actual tooth brushing comes along. But the cost of a tooth brush lost under the couch or behind the toilet… or into the never found again universe. So I’d suggest getting a couple of tooth brushes at the dollar store – like Dollar General. I’ve boughten decent children’s tooth brushes there for two for a dollar.

And as always keep a close eye on Little One when using a toothbrush by themselves. You’d hate for them to choke themselves with it. You have to teach them how to properly use it.

Detox Bath

Sick Baby

This past two weeks my son and I have had a terrible cold. Body aches, slight fevers, horrible congestion, runny nose, and disgusting drainage… your usual cold symptoms. Which as adults we pop our favorite form of cold and flu remedy medicines and deal with it. But in children – especially the two and under category – being sick is horrible. And there is no medicine to help with the symptoms. So what should you do when your poor baby is sick – a detox bath.

After reading about the latest hype on detoxing, I found there’s a lot of different ways to detox, and most seem like they come with horrible side effects from your body trying to expel the bad stuff. Nothing I would want to make my baby go through on top of already having a cold. And let’s be honest here – nothing I personally want to go through either. And it seems like there’s a lot of things that you have to purchase to do the detoxing. I wanted something that I already had on hand – like water. So I read more about water detoxing. And basically that would be to just drink extra water so that your body can use it towards expelling waste. But there’s also detox baths that you can add all sorts of things to also.

Then the other day I was giving Thomas his usual bath and my sister who had apparently also been researching the detox bath as well, came in and said that we should try it.

Thomas’ Detox Bath

3 drops of Eucalyptus oil

1/4 cup Sea salt or Epson Salt

1/4 cup Baking Soda

Squeeze of Johnson Johnson’s Baby Bedtime Bubble Bath Soap.

We dumped all that into his usual temperature of water and mixed it around for the bubbles. He loves having mountains of bubbles. And then we plopped him in the tub. In no time at all his nose started running.

After his bath his cough was gone, he was no longer choking on phlegm, he wasn’t sneezing. It made a world of difference. The effects of the bath though only last for less than 24 hours. But from what I read adults that are doing the detox bath are supposed to take about four baths a day to feel the effects for a cold. But on the plus side after a couple of detox baths his cold is very minute. Until I skipped it the other night and now today his cold is in full swing again. So tonight we will be having another detox bath. And Mommy might have one too.

Keep in mind that you want to keep them well hydrated. I have Thomas drink something like Poweraid or Gatoraid or even Pedialite, something that will help replenish the electrolites. He also drinks it after he gets out of the tub, while having a healthy snack.

Baby Book Review

It’s that time of year when everything seems like you can find it on sale. Well the other weekend we were shopping sales in Kohl’s, and they had the children’s books on sale – buy on get one half off. I’ll take that deal; books can be pretty spend-y.

So while there I bought my precious little man “I Love You Stinky Face”.

And he absolutely loves it. The first night we sat down to read it we had to read it, and I kid you not, 27 times, repeatedly. This is common for him. That’s part of the reason why we buy new books every time we are in town. Otherwise baby is happy and Mommy is not.

So if you’re looking for a cute new book to buy for you Little One, check it out. I love this book for boys because the little boy in it is challenging his mommy’s love for him, and instead of saying he turned into something like a polar bear, he turns into a slime-y smelly sea weed covered monster.

Happy Reading Everyone

 Tutoring Tommy

I honestly can’t remember what I used to do for fun before I had Thomas. I’m sure there was a bunch of stuff like hanging out with friends, and going to the movies, and shopping. But beyond that thought I can’t remember what I used to think was fun.

I’ve changed. It’s what people do. Now I find it fun to watch my kid in amazement as he does something, which I’m sure to other people seems stupid and ridiculous.  Like when he finds it completely amazing that he can blow bubbles in his cup, or when he shows me what body parts are where, or even when he is counting how many fingers I have.

I love spending the time to teach him all these things. And as much as I would love to take full credit for all of it, the most of the credit has to be given to him. He shocks me with how smart he is. Sometimes he picks things up and I have no idea where he learns it from.  But none the less, it makes me super proud.
